Msheireb Properties to showcase Doha’s sustainable regeneration project

Msheireb Properties, a subsidiary of Qatar Foundation, is set to showcase world class fire protection, safety, security, management and monitoring systems employed at its flagship project Msheireb Downtown Doha at the upcoming 4th Civil Defence Exhibition and Conference in Doha. Msheireb Properties is also a platinum sponsor of the event.

Eng Abdullah Hassan Al Mehshadi, CEO of Msheireb Properties said: “Msheireb Downtown Doha is the world’s first sustainable regeneration project which also employs world class safety and security technologies across the entire development. Our sponsorship of the event is a reflection our commitment to the implementation of the standards and guidelines set forth by the Civil Defense Authority.”

The project follows strict guidelines for resident and public safety, with an automated system that monitors areas including internal and external premises, primary service areas and service tunnels.

Msheireb Downtown Doha system is also equipped with fire detection and suppression technologies that include smoke extraction, CO2 detection and foam/gas suppression systems that are all centrally controlled and monitored through a central command centre.

On completion, Msheireb Downtown Doha is set to be the world’s largest certified sustainable community, with over 60 buildings meeting the LEED Gold standard for environmental performance, with some buildings attaining a Platinum rating. The development will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 110,000 tons per year–equal to emissions of more than 18 thousand automobiles, consuming over 42 million litres of gasoline.

The Civil Defence Exhibition and Conference will bring together academics, businesses, researchers and governmental authorities across Qatar. The event will be held from November 11- 13 at Qatar National Convention Centre.

du releases second Sustainable Development Report

On October 29, du announced the release of its second Sustainable Development Report 2012 – for which it has garnered a remarkable B+ rating by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The Sustainable Development Report conforms to the GRI G3.1 guidelines of the United Nations Global Compact – which du has been a member of since 2008.

du’s Sustainable Development Report 2012 covers initiatives carried out by the company across the triple bottom line of People, Planet and Profit. It demonstrates du’s dedicated triple bottom line ecosystem, in which the company focuses on human, social and intellectual capital (People), natural capital (Planet), and financial capital (Profit).

du’s reporting approach is divided into five chapters: Our Approach, Our People, Our Customers, Our Environment and Our Community.

Highlights of the report from within these chapters include:

Corporate Governance: du’s goal is to create shareholder value by combining responsible business practices with the highest standards of business integrity and accountability.

Emiratisation: As an Emirati company, du is keen to empower UAE Nationals with rewarding careers. In 2012, the company achieved an Emiratisation level of 31% – 3% higher than the anticipated level of 28%.

Pioneering External Engagement: du was the first telecommunications company to launch a Customer Satisfaction Report, setting new standards of transparency and engagement with external stakeholders.
